Nanda Roep – Author & Publisher Biography

Nanda Roep is a Dutch author and publisher known for her engaging children’s books and thoughtful novels for adults. With over 100 published titles to her name, she has built a versatile career spanning fiction and non-fiction, picture books and novels, journalism and songwriting. Her work is characterized by warmth, imagination, and a deep belief in the power of storytelling to create joy and insight.

Nanda studied Journalism at the School for Journalism in Utrecht, and her first children’s book was published in 1996 by renowned Dutch publisher Leopold. In 2002, she created the long-running Plaza Patatta book series, which has since become a staple in Dutch children’s literature. Her work has inspired thousands of children to read for pleasure, and the series is now actively used by Stichting Leesplezier (the Reading for Joy Foundation), which she co-founded.

Since 2008, Nanda has also written novels for adults. Her literary feel-good fiction explores themes of identity, resilience, and the quiet revolutions of everyday life. More recently, she has added cozy mysteries to her repertoire. Her writing has been compared to that of authors like Liane Moriarty and Joël Dicker — combining lightness with emotional depth and societal themes.

In addition to writing, Nanda is a seasoned publisher. In 2010, she founded Uitgeverij Nanda (Nanda Publishing), becoming the first official self-publisher in the Netherlands to sign a direct distribution contract with CB (Centraal Boekhuis – Dutch Book distribution). Through her publishing house, she not only brings her own books to market but also supports other creatives, including comedian and illustrator Silvester Zwaneveld.

Nanda’s creative career has also included songwriting (including work for Kinderen voor Kinderen – children’s popmusic) and television. She presented the children’s show Mijn Eigen Boek (My Own Book), encouraging preschoolers to create and share their own stories. As a journalist, she has written for national newspapers and magazines such as Trouw, Viva, and Margriet, and she served as editor-in-chief of Schrijven Magazine (the Dutch equivalent of Writing Magazine).

She lives in Apeldoorn with her partner Silvester Zwaneveld and their two children. Born in 1971 and raised in the rural Betuwe region of the Netherlands, Nanda brings both cosmopolitan insight and countryside calm to her work. Her mission is to live kindly, create joyfully, and share opportunities for others to thrive — values reflected in both her books and her foundation work.

Fun fact: Nanda’s books range from whimsical picture books (like Pompom and the Wheel of Feelings) to clever middle grade adventures, all the way to contemporary novels filled with heart and wit.
